Aligning strategy, change and projects: stakeholder value co-creation webinar
The webinar on Wednesday 22 April explored the practical implications for project management which arise from the presenter published book, ‘’, part of the Routledge Advancing Management and Business Studies series.
Much depends on how value is defined, which can vary from the very general, such as making life better, to the very specific, such as a monetary valuation of an object. In the book it builds up a case for a universal conception of value co-creation as occurring through different types of exchange, which always have material, social and mental aspects for the people concerned. There is a crucial difference between value for the individual and for the organisation – for organisations, value has material and social, but not mental, aspects. How project professionals manage their roles as representatives of organisations engaging with other individuals, groups and organisations leads to value being created or destroyed for different parties.
This webinar went on to explore the implications of this conception of value for the development of strategies and the design of change programmes for implementation. The roles of portfolio and programme management in achieving alignment between the strategic level and individual projects will be linked to the focus on value as a bridging concept.
Examples were drawn from personal experience of working in programme management, together with recent research findings from the project management literature. Links with APM publications and best practice guidance placed the arguments made in the webinar into a professional development context.
